Where Oslo heritage meets Danish craftsmanship

Set within a distinguished 1890s apartment building in Oslo’s St. Hanshaugen, Vigdis and her family have created an elegant, quietly refined home. At its heart, a Danish kitchen by uno form is seamlessly integrated into the architecture, conceived as an intrinsic part of the home rather than an addition to it.

Set within a classic 1890s apartment building on a quiet side street in Oslo’s historic St. Hanshaugen district, this top-floor residence was designed by architect H.O. Eriksen. The park is just a few steps away, with the neighbourhood’s intimate cafés and bakeries close at hand.

The apartment called for modernisation, yet Vigdis and her family were drawn to its original character – the generous ceiling heights, intricate stucco work, decorative ceiling roses and two fireplaces. Their approach was one of considered restraint, preserving the qualities that give the home its distinctive sense of place.

“There is something truly special about living in a home with so much history, so we wanted to modernise it with a light touch,” says Vigdis Tveit.

The 180 m² layout remained remarkably well suited to contemporary living, with one notable exception: the narrow, period kitchen overlooking the courtyard. The decision was therefore made to create a new kitchen in what had previously been one of the apartment’s reception rooms, transforming it into a natural gathering place for family and friends.

The white tall cabinets reflect natural daylight and accentuate the impressive ceiling height of the Oslo apartment.

Natural light fills the kitchen, featuring a walnut island from the Copenhagen collection and Glacier White cabinetry from the Avantgarde collection.

With windows extending all the way to the ceiling, the kitchen is centred around a walnut island from uno form’s Copenhagen Collection, paired with Glacier White cabinetry from the Avantgarde Collection.

The warm glow and expressive grain of the walnut make the island a defining feature and a natural focal point within the kitchen. The Glacier White surfaces lend the space an airy, elegant quality, reflecting the daylight and accentuating the apartment’s generous ceiling height. Together, the contrasting materials create a harmonious whole, allowing the kitchen to enter into a natural dialogue with the historic architecture of the home.

“This is actually the second time we have chosen a kitchen from uno form. The kitchen is the heart of our home, and we wanted something that would be both highly functional for everyday life and aesthetically beautiful for many years to come. We were looking for a solution that combined quality, timeless design and clean lines. It is an investment we have never regretted.”

The setting lends this home a rare sense of place. With the park just beyond its doorstep and the city within easy walking distance, it occupies a quiet threshold between nature and urban life. That relationship with its surroundings has naturally shaped the interiors, where abundant daylight, tactile materials and a restrained palette create a subtle continuity between inside and out.

For the family, the neighbourhood is familiar territory. Having lived here before, returning carries the unmistakable feeling of coming home. Green pockets, historic architecture and the energy of city life coexist effortlessly here, creating a character that has long drawn them back.

The kitchen has been relocated to the apartment's former dining room, creating a refined new heart within this elegant Oslo home.
For Vigdis, the kitchen is the heart of the home, and the family wanted a kitchen that combines everyday functionality with aesthetic beauty for many years to come.
The white fronts and handles create a light, elegant expression, reflecting natural daylight and enhancing the kitchen’s timeless design.

The home has been thoughtfully evolved around the original qualities of the property. Generous ceiling heights, carefully preserved details and a refined new layout bring past and present into quiet conversation.

The result is a considered and deeply personal home, where architecture provides a calm backdrop to everyday life, and where light, materiality and craftsmanship sit naturally within a setting that feels timeless.
